Nottingham’s Under 11 Poetry Jam.

Young people of Nottingham! Come down and write a poem about your city or, if you’ve already been inspired, bring along your pre-written poems. You’ll get the chance to either perform your poem to the group, or actors from The Television Workshop and Inspire Academy will perform it for you. Natalie Bruce of Inspire Academy will be on hand throughout to help you shape and craft your ideas.

11:00am – 1:00pm – Ongoing activities

The Big Read – Children and adults are invited to sit and have a read of some poetry from books provided by the Nottingham Central library, explore the displays of work provided by local schools and youth groups, competition entries will also be included in this display.

The ’Poetree’ will be also on display but no emphasis is needed in partaking in this activity during this time. The staff will encourage the group to interact with each other and a brief introduction to the event will be given accordingly.
Nottingham Central Library will be donating reading material for the event Jack staples, children’s story illustrator will be doing a live illustration during this time, the children are welcome to watch and share ideas with Jack. The ‘poetree’ aims to create a huge poem compiled of lines produced by the children. This will be printed in the left lion magazine.

Young Poets competition, The children will be encouraged to enter by submitting pieces they have created during the day; the winner will receive a book voucher and their poem will be printed in the left lion magazine.

*There will be worksheets available and other activities/ puzzles will be provided to occupy those who may want to work individually

12:00pm – 1:00pm – The Anti Gallery Interactive poetry workshop

The Anti Gallery will conduct this section of the event. The children will create interactive pieces of poetry using the materials provided and will be able to take them home or put toward an exhibition.

Performances – 1:00pm- 2:00pm

Chai Larden- Local Poet Chai will be reading a few original pieces of her own works accompanied by her daughter Lola…
Inspire academy and the Television workshop under 11s will be performing pieces of their own poetry created in a workshop held by myself prior to the event. They will also be sharing favorite pieces of poetry

Stephen Thomas – Mouthy Poets member Stephen will be sharing some of his own comedic poetry pieces

NCN – Performances from local students from NCN Clarendon performing arts.

Charlotte Handley – Local professional Actress Charlotte Handley will be performing some of her chosen poetry

Becky Matter – Becky Matter is an established performer, lecturer, and practitioner who specializes in character based performances and will be performing her original work.
Inspire academy and Television workshop- Older members of these theater groups will be performing some well-known children’s poetry.

2:00pm – 3:00pm
The War of the words
This event will be led by the actors, participants are to pull items at random out of a bag and create a rhyme to challenge their opponent. This is to reflect the culture of a ‘Poetry Jam’ and it’s just a bit of fun! – to continue until close of the event.

The event will be curated and ran by Natalia Bruce. Natalia has extensive experience of working with young people and currently heads up 2 groups for Inspire Academy.

The days events are a part of  the “Young Nottingham, Poetry Collection” project.
